Googlewhacking?

Posted in Fun & Games on January 27, 2002

Googlewhacking is the newest game for people with good vocabularies and too much time on their hands. Here are the basic rules: Try to find a combination of two English words (dictionary.com is the final judge on whether a word qualifies) that, when searched for on Google, returns exactly one result. It’s surprisingly addictive — and it will give you some insigt into just how strange the Internet is. :-) Post your “Googlewhacks” below. My personal best? “matriculation linguini”

My best is deontological rattlesnake. That's a score of 1,382,400,000 according to the scoring method listed here (you search Google for each word, individually, then multiply the result tallies).

"backwash soda" seems to be one also. soda (=1,370,00) * backwash (=45,600) yeilded

62,472,000,000. not bad for less than 5 mins of a try? i think the key is to get common enough words that just shouldn't be togther. I'll put that theory to the test if i can just remember which of these drinks is mine...

Try it without the quotes though... if you search for "backwash soda" you get one result; if you try backwash soda you get about 1,520. Finding words side-by-side together is an interesting experiment (& probably almost as difficult to find exactly one) -- but I think the original intent of the googlewhack is to find words that are only on the same page in one place.

Alas, i knew there was a catch. As with the rest of life, when left without clear and definate rules, i tend to make my own. I wonder, is this a characteristic of the majority of all mensans? Do we all create our own world when left to do so? Or is it more a tendancy to passively rebel while venting creativity? and which soda was yours again?

i think i drank out of that one too, sorry.
