I haven't seen anyplace exactly how the President plans to promote marriage (do the single moms just put their name on a 'I-want-to-get-married' list?)... but it seems like a bad idea to me. Marriage is not an answer. It doesn't solve problems -- in fact, it can cause a lot more problems if it's not right for the individuals involved. And haven't they been telling us all along that divorce costs the government so many millions of dollars each year? Why encourage less-than-ideal marriages that are more likely to end up in divorce...?
I'm not a single mom, so I don't know all the hardship that goes along with it. But if I were in that situation, I can't imagine that simply having any old husband around would be preferable to either being on my own or waiting until the right person comes along. Marriage for marriage's sake seems to be what the Pres is advocating, and that doesn't seem beneficial to anyone -- not the single mom, not the children, and not society.
