Byline Magazine, a writers’ magazine based right here in Central Oklahoma, has several writing contests with deadlines approaching, including fiction, children’s poetry, and nostalgia. Entry fees are generally in the $3-$5 range, with prizes up to around $50.


The 13th Annual Short Story Contest, sponsored by San Luis Obispo NightWriters, has a deadline of August 31, 2002. The Short Story Contest has an entry fee of $10 for first story, plus $5 per additional story. Prizes include $100 for 1st, $75 for 2nd, $50 for 3rd. The story must begin with “Life is full of surprises”. Membership in NightWriters is not required. 500 word maximum - every word (including “a”) counts, except for the title. Hyphenated words count as two words. Entries must be typed, double-spaced, on one side of paper. To enter, send 3 copies of each story, with no identification other than the last four digits of your Social Security number at upper left. On the cover page, type your name, address, phone number, story title, word count, and last four digits of your Social Security number. Enclose check payable to SLO NightWriters. Winners will appear in the NightWriters newsletter. Manuscripts will not be returned.
