Announcing EdSig

Posted in Local Editor Resources on September 9, 2002

Meredy Amyx, EdSIG Coordinator, recently posted this announcement on the Editors’ e-list: “A new SIG has been created just for local group newsletter (LGN) editors—editors of print publications—past, present, and future.” Click ‘Read More’ below for all the details.

“The Editors SIG is a formally registered SIG of American Mensa. Its purpose is discussion of principles and practice in editing local group newsletters. Members will exchange ideas about editing Mensa newsletters,
discuss their philosophies, share solutions specific to the print medium,
and recognize members’ achievement. Members will take turns creating an
exhibition newsletter, printed on paper and mailed to members monthly or
bimonthly.

“This SIG and its newsletter are unique in that the newsletter is not the
vehicle of SIG discussion—it is the subject, along with all the
related matters of LGN editing, production, and newsletter management that
are of interest to print editors. Discussion takes place through
subscription to a closed online group list.

“The idea is editors talking to editors about what they do—and showing
each other by editing an issue of the SIG newsletter using at least 50% of
the same content. We’ll model it on a LGN, with calendar (or calendar
emulation), administrative columns, feature content, entertainment,
etc. Each editor in turn will give it the works in his or her own way,
with the option to include an editorial talking about their process, what
they were trying to do with this issue, etc. The real discussion will take
place on the SIG e-list and not in the newsletter, which simply provides
discussion material as well as an opportunity to show your stuff.

“Naturally with monthly or bimonthly issues we won’t get around to everybody
right away—maybe not even while you’re still a local group editor!—but
once you’ve been one, you’ll always be qualified for membership. And all
members can chime in on the discussion list.

“Dues/subscription rate is $15/year, payable to Meredy Amyx. To join, send a check and your e-mail address to Meredy Amyx, 994 North Second Street, San Jose, CA 95112. Please include a copy of a Mensa local group newsletter you have edited and mention your dates of service to the group.”

Editors, former editors, and editors-to-be of LGNs are invited to inquire
further by sending a message to Meredy Amyx with the subject line
‘m-edsig’.
